About TMC

We exist to help people
move forward.

The Mortgage Consultancy was built on a belief that good financial advice changes lives. Not just the transaction. The life behind it.

Our Story

25 years of doing
things differently.

Peter Vandervennin founded The Mortgage Consultancy over 25 years ago on the values he still holds today: long-term relationships, genuine expertise, and doing right by clients, especially the complex ones, the ones other brokers turn away.

The firm built its reputation case by case. Through the 2008 financial crisis. Through the complexity that came after. And it became known as the place people were referred to when they needed someone who could actually find a way through.

Hannah Vandervennin joined in 2018. Her route into finance wasn't a straight line.

She came from a background working with people experiencing homelessness, helping them find housing, stability and a path forward. That work taught her something that shapes every client interaction she has today: housing is not just an asset. It is security. It is dignity. It is the foundation of what comes next.

Hannah leads the firm today, combining Peter's legacy and experience with a modern, strategic approach. She is also a trustee of a local homelessness charity, a role that keeps her grounded in what property, and the lack of it, really means to people.

How we work

What we believe about specialist advice.

Fund. Build. Protect. is the thread that runs through every conversation we have and every case we take on. Funding the opportunity, building the wealth, and protecting the people and assets at the centre of it. One joined-up approach to work that often gets handled in pieces.

Specialism, taken seriously.

Bridging, development finance, complex buy-to-let and commercial lending are not sidelines for us. They are the work. We know the lenders, we know how the structures fit together, and we know how decisions actually get made behind the scenes. That depth is the difference between a case that completes and a case that stalls.

Relationships built to last.

Clients placed in the early 2000s are still with us. That is not an accident, it is the point. We are here for the next phase of your portfolio, your business and your life, not just the next transaction. The advice you get from us is shaped by what comes after it, every time.

Knowledge, openly shared.

Specialist property finance is its own discipline, and a lot of it stays hidden behind closed doors. We take a different view. Our guides, workshops and events are designed to give you a real working understanding of how this part of the market actually works, because the industry is better when more people understand it.

Plain talk on complex work.

The work is technical. The advice doesn't have to be. We tell you what's possible, what isn't, and why, in language you can actually use. No hedging, no jargon for its own sake, no holding back the answer to keep the conversation going.

The team

The people behind the advice.

A family-led firm, twenty-five years in. The directors set the tone. The advisers, case managers and business development team carry it through every case, every conversation, every client.

Leadership

Two generations. One philosophy.

Hannah Vandervennin

Director
Specialist property finance · Brand, content & technology

"A mortgage isn't just a product. It's security, freedom, and the foundation of what comes next."

Hannah leads the firm today, but her route into finance was anything but a straight line. Before joining the family business in 2018, she spent years working with charities and local authorities supporting people experiencing homelessness, helping them find housing, stability and a path forward.

That work shapes every client interaction she has today. She advises clients directly on specialist property finance, holds the firm to its standards, leads its brand, content and technology direction, and is committed to bringing more advisers into the sector who reflect the clients and communities they serve.

Peter Vandervennin

Director
Founder · Four decades in financial services

"Complex clients deserve better than a rushed answer and a declined application."

Today, Peter consults on the firm's most complex cases and is a regular speaker on the UK property networking circuit, where he is known for clear thinking on specialist finance. He works closely with lenders on shaping products that genuinely deliver for complex clients. TN

Tyra Ntege

Protection Adviser
COVER Awards Rising Star (Intermediary) 2025

"If the worst happens, the outcome should be controlled, not left to chance."

Tyra came into protection advice the way few people do: through living it. In 2023, her family home caught fire, her mother needed critical heart surgery with limited sick pay, her father faced his own health complications, and the family experienced losses without financial protection in place. The financial impact of those months reshaped how she saw the work she wanted to do.

Before protection, Tyra trained as a lawyer, completing the Legal Practice Course and a training contract at a Magic Circle firm, with time in real estate finance and international offices in Paris and Madrid. That legal grounding gives her a rigorous eye for the detail that matters most when a claim is made.

Today she advises working professionals, business owners and landlords on protecting income, family, property portfolios, and business continuity. She was named Rising Star in the Intermediary category at the 2025 COVER Awards, recognition voted by the protection industry itself.

TS

Tatenda Shonhiwa

Mortgage and Protection Adviser

"Numbers don't lie. They just need someone willing to read them properly."

Tatenda joined The Mortgage Consultancy in 2023 after a career in higher education and sport development, with roles at the University of York and the London School of Economics. The relationship and partnership work he led in those settings translates directly into how he approaches clients today: get to know the person, understand what they're actually trying to build, and bring the numbers to bear on the answer.

He advises clients on both mortgages and protection, with a sharp eye for what makes a deal stack up properly. He is committed to financial literacy and to helping clients look at deals differently.
