In short

What does private medical insurance cover?

Private medical insurance pays for private diagnosis and treatment of acute conditions, the kind that respond to treatment, so you can see a consultant without waiting on an NHS list. Most comprehensive policies include cancer cover and mental health treatment. How pre-existing conditions are treated depends on the underwriting basis, so that choice matters as much as the premium.

FAQs

Common questions about private medical insurance

CPME (Continued Personal Medical Exclusions) is used when you switch insurers: your new policy carries over the exclusions from your existing one, so conditions already covered stay covered. Moratorium underwriting needs no medical disclosure upfront. It excludes conditions you had symptoms, treatment or advice for in the five years before cover starts, but can cover them once you go two continuous years on the policy without symptoms, treatment or advice for them. We'll advise which is best for your circumstances.

Yes. With moratorium underwriting, a pre-existing condition can become covered once you have gone two continuous years on the policy without symptoms, treatment or advice for it. With full medical underwriting or CPME, specific pre-existing conditions are excluded by name and everything else is covered from day one. Some insurers will also consider including pre-existing conditions for a higher premium.

PMI premiums typically range from around £50 to £200+ per month depending on your age, the level of cover chosen, the excess you select and the insurer. Family policies are more expensive than individual cover. Choosing a higher excess can significantly reduce your premium.

Yes, most comprehensive PMI policies include full cancer cover, including chemotherapy, radiotherapy, surgery, specialist consultations and associated diagnostic tests. We ensure any policy we recommend includes robust cancer cover as a minimum.

For individuals, PMI premiums are not tax deductible. For businesses, premiums paid for employee PMI are an allowable business expense, though they become a taxable benefit in kind (P11D) for the employees covered. Group PMI is handled differently, speak to us for details.

Yes, most PMI insurers offer optional dental and optical add-ons at an additional premium. These typically cover routine dental check-ups, fillings, eye tests and a contribution towards glasses or contact lenses. We'll include these options in your comparison if required.

A broker compares the whole market rather than one insurer's range, which matters more in PMI than in most products because underwriting terms, hospital lists and outpatient limits vary so widely between insurers for the same headline price. As a private medical insurance broker we also handle the renewal each year, which is where most of the saving sits, and we argue your corner if a claim is queried. Our advice is not tied to any single provider.

Often yes, through continued personal medical exclusions, sometimes called switch underwriting. This carries your existing terms across to the new insurer so conditions already covered remain covered. It is not automatic and not every insurer offers it on every scheme, so the switch needs handling carefully. Moving to full medical underwriting or a moratorium basis instead can reintroduce exclusions you had already cleared.

How we work

Private medical advice
that respects the small print.

PMI is a contract. The wording matters as much as the price. Here is how we approach yours.

Pre-existing conditions, properly explained

Moratorium underwriting. Full medical underwriting. Continued personal medical exclusions. We translate the underwriting basis so you know what is and is not covered before you commit.

Personal and corporate

Personal cover for individuals and families, corporate schemes for SMEs and group cover for larger employers. Whole-of-market access across all UK PMI insurers.

Reviewed at renewal

PMI premiums move every year. We benchmark your renewal against the market and tell you honestly when staying put is the right call and when switching makes sense.
