Common questions about group insurance

Most group insurance schemes require a minimum of 2–3 employees, though some providers will consider smaller schemes. Group life assurance typically requires a minimum of 3 employees, while group PMI is available for 2 or more. We'll identify the most suitable providers for your headcount.

Registered group life assurance schemes set up under a registered pension scheme are exempt from P11D reporting under HMRC rules, making them highly tax-efficient for both employer and employee. Group PMI, however, is a taxable P11D benefit for employees.

Yes, most group PMI schemes allow employees to add partners and dependent children at preferential group rates. This is typically optional and paid for by the employee as an additional premium, though some employers choose to subsidise or fully fund family cover.

Group income protection is generally cheaper per head than individual policies and does not require individual medical underwriting, employees are covered automatically on a free cover limit basis. Individual income protection is personalised and portable but typically costs more and requires medical disclosure.

Yes, group insurance premiums are generally an allowable business expense for corporation tax purposes, subject to the usual rules around wholly and exclusively for business purposes. This makes group schemes a very tax-efficient way to reward and retain employees.
